Paul “Fifty” Johnson is a Detroit-based interdisciplinary artist exploring identity, color, and representation, shaped by personal experience and global travel. His work reflects diverse cultural influences and a focus on how people of color are portrayed in visual culture.

Blending street art, contemporary art, and streetwear, Johnson examines color—especially the idea of Black as a shade rather than a color. His “Sambo Princesses,” inspired by Betty Boop and anime, feature exaggerated female forms that celebrate and critique representations of femininity.

His work has been widely exhibited and recognized for its originality and technical skill. He has collaborated with brands like Nike, Converse, Crypton, and Haworth, while staying active in community-based artistic collaborations across multiple mediums.

In his latest work, Johnson uses loose, gestural sketches to build monochromatic compositions. This minimal approach highlights emotion, texture, and dimension, exploring identity through restraint.
